IPL 2022: MI Vs CSK, Mumbai Indians wins by 5 wickets

Super Kings of Chennai will have to perform in order to score in every match.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) won the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after defeating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 5 wickets on Thursday at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. A strong bowling performance led by Daniel Sams' three-wicket haul dropped CSK to 97 in the first innings before a crucial partnership between Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen propelled MI to a five-wicket victory. MI lost Ishan Kishan in the first over of their 98-run chase after the opener was caught off only Mukesh Choudhary's bowling. MI took the lead early on thanks to Rohit Sharma's exquisite shots.

However, the MI captain was caught behind off the bowling of Simarjeet Singh. Mukesh Choudhary delivered the fifth over and both Daniel Sams and Tristan Stubbs were caught LBW. Having Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen in the net, MI led 36-4 at the end of the powerplay. The pair formed an important connection that helped MI advance to 66-4 at the midway point, as they needed 32 off 60 deliveries.

The pair continued to add runs until Moeen Ali duped Shokeen and kingside attacked the stumps. Tim David shafted a maximum and hit the winning runs in the 15th overs with only 9 runs required. MS Dhoni remained at the crease, but after Riley Meredith eliminated Ambati Rayudu and Shivam Dube, MI kept the pressure on the CSK batters.

CSK lost their ninth wicket when Maheesh Theekshana was captured by Rohit off the bowling of Ramandeep Singh. CSK were all out for 97 as Ishan Kishan hit a direct hit to run out Mukesh Choudhary.
